Why Are There Waste Restrictions?

When you hire a skip it’s more than likely because you have a bunch of general waste ready to be thrown away. We can certainly help with this, however, there are some items you cannot put in it. These rules are in place to make sure that our skip operators remain safe as well as our customers. We strive to make sure that minimal waste ends up in landfill, you can help us with this by following out guidelines. This is a short list of the main items we restrict, if you want the full list then you can look at our Terms of Business page.

Our Restrictions List

Every company will have its own specific regulations so it’s always best to check with them before putting your waste in. If you don’t adhere to their rule you could have legal action taken against you. Here are our waste restrictions:

Sofas and Upholstered Furniture (POPs)

UK Government Legislation has changed the way you dispose of upholstered items such as sofas, armchairs, and office chairs. They should be stored, processed, and treated in an appropriate facility to prevent harm to our environment. They do not break down and leave chemicals in the fatty tissues of humans and animals. We can help with the disposal of these items but please make sure to check with us to clarify charges and other information.

Electrical appliances

Electrical Appliances and Equipment

We regularly see electrical equipment in our skips, however, they aren’t permitted as they can be hazardous. If the item needs a charger, plug, or batteries to work then it isn’t allowed in your skip. Take them to your local electric recycling point for proper disposal, you can find the closest one here.

Skip With a Mattress

Mattresses

We can take your old skips if needed, however, please make sure that your skip can fit in before contacting us. We charge an extra £45 – £50 + VAT per mattress. If you’d like us to take care of your mattress, you just need to let us know before putting it in the skip.

Plasterboard Waste

Plasterboard

Another building material that we don’t allow in our skips is plasterboard. This is because it can give off harmful fumes when mixed with water or biodegradable items. We can accept 1-2 bin bags of plasterboard on top of the skip at the time of collection. If you need to dispose of a large amount, please contact us to discuss a plasterboard-only skip.

pile of used batteries

Batteries

All batteries, from AAA to car batteries, contain dangerous chemicals including lead. This can be very dangerous if they were to leak in a skip, potentially contaminating other items in the process. We can’t risk chemical burns or any other injuries coming to our skip operators. For that reason, they should be taken to a battery bin to be cleaned properly before disposal.

Old asbestos requiring disposal

Asbestos

Asbestos is a very dangerous substance that can increase your chances of lung disease and cancers. Some of which might not surface until years after exposure. Please make sure to call a specialist to remove it for you if you find any, they should have the correct equipment and experience to remove it properly.

Stack of old gas cylinders for recycling

Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders are never truly empty, for that reason they are a potential hazard due to combustion. We don’t want to have possible dangers in the skip that could cause harm to our skip operators. If you need any of these disposed of please call the manufacturer for advice on proper disposal or contact a local specialist.

Medical waste, used syringes and medicine bottles

Medical Waste

This includes a variety of items including needles, bodily parts or fluids, and any item that could contaminate the other waste. We don’t accept any of those items as we don’t want to spread any illnesses to our skip operators. Please make sure any items that come under that category are taken to a specialist to be disposed of properly.

Glass Waste

Glass

As we know, glass is very sharp when it is broken. This is very easily done in a skip as most people are heavy-handed when disposing of their waste. For this reason, we can’t accept a large amount of glass. We understand that many household items do contain glass, however, if you have generous amounts of glass to dispose of give us a call to discuss a glass-only skip.

pile of used tyres for disposal

Tyres & Other Items

There are some other items, such as types, that contain a large amount of rubber. These sorts of items can be disposed of by us but require an extra charge. If there are any other items not on the list, you should always check with us or your local council to find the restrictions.

Used paint tins, fuels and solvents.

Paint, Solvents, and Fuels

These items are widely known to be dangerous and possibly combustible. As a result of this, they could cause harm such as chemical burn and injury to you and our skip operators. For that reason, they should be taken to a specialist center to be disposed of properly.
